STUDENTS AGAINST VIOLENCE EVERYWHERE

MAY: FOCUS ON SUBSTANCE ABUSE

The abuse of substances by anyone is a serious and dangerous situation, but abuse by young people is most disturbing. The naivety and lack of fear among youth coupled with illegal or other harmful materials is a deadly combination. In many instances violent incidents accompany substance abuse, therefore making it another relevant topic to be addressed by SAVE chapters. It is important to educate children on the dangers and consequences of substance abuse at as early an age as possible. We strongly encourage SAVE chapters to address issues of alcohol and substance abuse especially during this stressful time of year when students are involved with end of year activities from exams to proms and parties. Set the stage for a safe summer free from violence and substance abuse.

Crime Prevention Activities

  • Sponsor a poster contest on substance abuse prevention.

  • Utilize the “Drug Abuse: How to Say No Activity“ (SAVE Essentials, Crime Prevention – 13).

  • Develop and distribute a brochure informing students of various date rape drugs for their awareness and protection.

  • Create and submit to your school newspaper articles sharing information on substance abuse. Emphasize huffing inhalants and over the counter misuse.

  • Place labels of commonly misused household products around school so students will understand the deadly effects of the contents (i.e. paint).

Service Project Activities

  • Sponsor a parent “Did You Know” night. Goal is to share relevant current information on substance abuse issues. Involve administrators, counselors, SROs and local community medical members.

  • Develop and implement a “Prom Promise” Campaign.

  • Host an after Prom event with safe, fun activities.

  • Develop a district level anonymous tipline to help students report illicit drug use and drug sales on campus.
