Weapon Safety

Eighteen percent of high school students reported they carried a weapon and at least 6% reported they carried a gun at least one day in the prior month (Indicators of School Crime & Safety, Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2014).  Many weapons, not just firearms, are discovered on school campuses every year. Do students at your school know what is considered a weapon? Each state has a specific definition of what is considered a weapon and what the consequences are for bringing a weapon on campus. November is a great time to remind students of your school’s weapon policies and the consequences for bringing weapons on campus.
